CAMBRIDGE, MA \u2013 January 6, 2011 \u2013Montague Corporation, the manufacturer of the Montague and SwissBike line of full-size folding bikes, recently made a donation of bike frames and components to Bikes Not Bombs, located in Jamaica Plain, MA.<\/p>\n
Bikes not Bombs is a non-profit organization that has been working for more than 25 years to promote peace, social justice, and sustainable living practices. To this end, Bikes Not Bombs has established bicycle recycling projects and related community initiatives in both lower income neighborhoods in Boston and developing countries all over the world.<\/p>\n
Bikes Not Bombs fixes and rebuilds the donated bikes then sends the majority of them to economic development projects all over the globe. They have worked in Ghana, Guatemala, Tanzania, Nicaragua, Haiti, El Salvador and South Africa to name a few. They also send technicians and tools to these same countries to start micro-enterprise bike businesses, sustainable technology projects, and youth training programs.<\/p>\n
The remaining bikes that are not shipped abroad are used at the BNB Center in Jamaica Plain, MA in their youth Earn-A-Bike programs or are repaired by young mechanics as part of their Vocational Training program. BNB also runs a full service bike shop that is staffed by local teen graduates of their training programs.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re really glad to have an organization like Bikes Not Bombs in our community,\u201d says Marketing Manager Dave Criswell. \u201cWe\u2019re constantly working to improve the quality and performance of our bicycles. When product samples and prototypes come in to our offices, we inevitably don\u2019t use everything. So instead of accumulating in our warehouse, we\u2019re happy to be able to donate our otherwise unused bike frames and components to such a great cause.\u201d<\/p>\n
